I bought this Toshiba 4280ZDVD to run my daughter's bio
feedback program for her brain injury. This takes windows
98 which the seller said they would install but instead
they installed windows 2000 and it is missing the part that
goes in the "add/remove" programs which lets you uninstall
it. I tried the
other method suggested by microsoft and that didn't work
and just now I tried to run a "format" program that a
friend sent me and the darn thing sits there and laughs at
me. It wont take windows 98. Also I am missing something
else and that is the ability to have 256 color and when I
go to control panel, display, settings, this option is not
their either. Windows 98 wants the 256 color. HELP!!!

There has never been an uninstall for any microsoft operating system. You
uninstall programs not operating systems. If you wish to change operating
systems you must wipe the disk and install the one you want. (unless it is a
supported upgrade such as windows 2000 pro -> windows XP pro) It is best to
wipe the disk then install upgrades can get goofy. The key is supported
upgrade. windows 2000 to windows 98 is not supported. Therefor you must wipe
the disk then install.

You can not format the hard disk that you have booted to (kind of like
taking the car engine apart while it is running). You have to create a
bootable floppy with the format utility on it. Boot to the floppy and run
the format utility.

If you only have 256 colors, this means you do not have the correct video
driver installed. Go to the Toshiba website and download and install the
correct video driver for the model laptop you have.

There are a few worrying things in your post:

a) Win2000 is a much better operating system than Win98.
Going back to Win98 would a backward step.

b) To install a program, you don't go to "Add/Remove Program".
Instead you follow the manufacturer's instructions. In most
cases you double-click something like "install.exe" on the
installation CD.

c) To get 256 colours, you use the video driver that was on
the CD that came with your PC. If you cannot find it
then you must find out what video adapter you actually
have, then download its driver from www.driverguide.com.

c) If you really want to remove Win2000 then you can do this:
- Boot with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com.
- Run fdisk.exe and use it to delete all partitions. You will,
of course, lose all information currently on the disk.
- While still in fdisk.exe, create one or several new partitions,
as per your preference.
- Boot your machine again with this boot disk, then run
format.com to format your drive(s).
- Boot your machine with your Win98 installation CD, then
install Windows 98.

You dont make it clear as to why you wish to install win98 - a step
backwards from win2k
It doesnt sound as though yr very familiar with the operation of a pc, you
might be advised to seek 'knowledgable' one on one assistance before you
'wreck' the sys. particularly if its for medical use.

Greetings --

There won't be an option within the Control Panel's Add/Remove
Programs applet. The normal way to "uninstall" _any_ operating system
is to format the hard drive and install a new OS of your choice.

The computer was not originallypurchased by me and came
stripped, no CD's or manuals. The seller thought they were
doing me a favor by adding windows 2000 but m daughter's
brain injury repair program will only run on windows 98. I
will try to print out what you have said and see if anyone
understands it. I don't know what a fdisk.exe is or
anything about partitions. Al I want is a blank hard drive
on which to put windows 98 and I do know I have to then go
to Toshiba and retrieve all the stuff they would have put
on it. In the end I might have to get someone to do all
this for me but at least you got me started. Thank you.
Where do I go to find out what video adapter I have? I am
in Fort Bragg, CA and there
seems to be no one here who teaches this stuff.

Seeing that you're not used to looking under the bonnet
of a PC, I strongly recommend that you ask someone
to assist you. While Fort Bragg CA only has a population
of 7026, there are bound to be some who know PCs inside
out. One of them might be reading this note right now -
if so, speak up! You could also ask the principal of the
college nearest to you and ask him for the name of the
information technology tutor. He/she could open lots of
doors for you.

About your video adapter: This can be a difficult issue to
resolve even for the expert. Since it's not life threatening
to have less than 256 colours, I recommend you leave it
alone for the time being.

If you wish to erase your hard disk by yourself (and lose
all data on it!), here is a step by step procedure:
1. Get a win98 boot disk file from www.bootdisk.com.
2. Double-click the downloaded file. It will make a boot diskette for you.
3. Boot your machine with this diskette.
4. Type fdisk
5. Look at the menu. Item 3 lets you delete partitions. Delete
every partition.

If the drive is NTFS he may experience difficulties with the DOS boot
disk. The simplest and easiest way to deal with NTFS NT removals is
with delpart right from the start. http://www.russelltexas.com/delpart.htm

The suggestion to ask the college dean or high school principal is an
excellent one. And in a town of 7,026 there must be a reliable pc shop
or if not there should be one in a nearby town or city 10 minutes away.
