Uninstalling SP2 or going backward with system restore?

SP2 has created a myriad of issues for me. Can't
change properties in drives (can't
rename/share), can't update software via net
update (long garbled error messages), can't
install Palm Desktop software (error claims old
version can't be written over, when there is NO
version to remove), cordless keyboard software
(logitech) won't start at start-up. Various tech
supports have given up after trying latest
software, removes and reinstalls, etc.
Can I use the system restore function to go back
to an earlier registry with more problems?
Anyone have any ideas about some of these
problems? Sure would appreciate some input.

"Can I use the system restore function to go back to an earlier
registry with more problems?"
You had problems before you installed SP-2?
You should not install SP-2 with the intentions of it resolving
problems, instead more problems are probable.
System Restore should be able to go back.
But Add/Remove Programs is the preferred way.

Was your hardware (Palm etc) and software compatible with SP-2?
Was the computer ready for SP-2?

Thanks for the quick response.

Are you saying I can go back before SP2 with
system restore (accessories, system tools,
system restore) without negative consequences
(except for more recent hardware and software
changes)?

No. I did not have problems before installing
SP2. SP2 was not installed for any cure.
Computer (Toshiba M10) came loaded with XP Pro.

Yes. The Palm hardware device is compatible with
SP2, per Kyocera.
Yes the palm software is compatible with SP2 per
Kyocera.

I had no problems re-naming and sharing drive
devices (internal HDD, memory sticks, internal
CD) prior to SP2 (as far as I know).

I don't know whether the computer was "ready"
for SP2. It had SP1 on it. It was scan disked
and defraged with no errors.

I don't know what I should "Add/Remove." The
Palm error states I have an old version
installed, when I have none, and Add/Remove
lists no palm software.

Not sure about getting the properties function
to allow renaming and sharing via add/remove.
Right now, just clicking on properties of a
drive produces a never ending hour-glass. Same
is true if the C-Drive is highlighted (left
click) in the Windows Explorer directory tree
and the mouse cursor passes over the menu bar
"file" or "edit functions." Closing explorer in
the windows task manager is the only way out.
Can you advise me on what to remove?

I am checking out those links you suggested.

Yes System should work as you described but Add/Remove Programs is
preferred.
In any case, you may be better off to go back and double check using
the checklist as referenced below.

Check with Palm about that error message.
They may have a fix on their site.

What I meant by ready was no viruses, spyware or other issues known or
unknown.
The Service Pack Installation Checklist covers most of them:

Hopefully you are doing most routinely.

"Service Pack 2" should be listed near the bottom of Add/Remove
Programs.
First reboot, then double click "Service Pack 2"
Follow prompts to uninstall and reboot after it is finished.

I really appreciate this assistance.

OK. Saw Windows Sp2 in add/remove. Will try this
when I am not on the road, lest I lose computer
access on this road warrior.

Yes, I was virus clean. I have now run Adaware
and Spy-bot, which both found a very "few"
malwares, now gone. I do not and did not have
any virus (actually have never been infected in
20 years!). (PC-Cillin up=to=date)

Palm, actually Kyocera (they support my PDA
phone), is a) confident the software should load
(latest from Palm), and b) suggests the only
problem may be with a corrupt Installshield. I
haven't figured out how to do a reinstall of
Installshield (part of the XP install). I
suspect there must be the equivalent of the
Win9x sfc.exe but I don't know what it is. I
also suspect this won't fix things.....

Have printed your recommended check list, but
have not have a chance to implement activities.

I am learning a whole heck of a lot more about
Windows XP than I ever wanted to learn about
simple care free transparent computing. Is this
why Mac people smile and have more leisure time?

I've had these same problems as well as many of the other problems listed in
other discussions and I, like most other users, have enough sense to follow
the prep and installation instructions without fail. I've finally uninstalled
after applying many of the "fixes" suggested in Microsoft support but am
still not completely back to running well - cannot use Windows Explorer,
Internet Explorer, etc. I'll be spending another evening attempting to
recover from the SP2 update..... I must also add: the many condescending
replies by the "MVPs" are rude and unwarranted and it's a shame. spunk
