I've recently aquired a Compaq Presario Notebook, & am trying desperately to
get all of the AOL Services out that came w/said Computer... So far, no go!
Can anyone help me? I'd be ever so grateful, & I thank you for your time &
input in advance. BTW... Went through all steps that this Computer
recommended, but still cannot get AOL out, but I HAVE NOT installed it, don't
want to, just want to get rid of what's here so far... Thanks again... :)

Many people say you have to reformat the computer in order to truly get rid
of AO-Hell.

Hi Tom!
Thanks so much for the reply, & all I can say right now, (because my chin
is laying on my knees! LOL), is "surely you jest"! Lordy, I know I'm not an
AOL person, never have been, but have known a lot of folks who are, & they
tell me getting loose from AOL is indeed a nightmare! However, I've not
installed any part of it, but I've got shortcuts on the desktop galore!
Arggggg! Thanks again, & Have a Great Weekend... ;)

There have been mentions in the media that AOL was being sued by those folks
experiencing difficulties in getting rid of their junk. You may want to join
the class-action lawsuit.

Patt,
What have you done to try uninstalling aoHell<g>.
Is the program installed & showing in Start-All Progs.?
Click Search and it will show you what AOL progs. you have installed on your
computer.
Then there should be another host of utilities. Click Sys. Info.
Then look for AOL S/W Installed. If nothing else is installed you should be
able to just uninstall via Control Panel.

If the program is installed in Control Panel - Add / Remove you should see
AOL.
Just click remove.
After it says it has been removed you may still see icons and maybe even
folders in Explorer.
Just manually delete them. For some dumb reason even after uninstalling aol
the folder remain visible.
That should do the trick. Hope it helps.

You could try first re-installing AOL to replace the Control Panel
entry, and then uninstall it properly. However, I'm not all that
confident that it would do you much good.

Sadly, the only practical way I've ever found to completely remove
AOL from an operating system is to format the hard drive and perform a
clean installation. I absolutely loathe having to resort to a hard
drive format to fix what should be a relatively minor issue, but it
takes a lot less time than manually removing/replacing all of the
Windows system files that AOL replaces with their own versions and the
hundreds of unnecessary registry entries.

Hi Jerry!
Thanks to you too! ;) If I have to go into the registry & "pluck" 1 piece
at a time, LOL, I will get rid of it... However, I'd surely like a simpler
way, you know? The AOL Corporate "shin-dig", well, hope all works out alright
for all involved... Again, I thank you & hope you have a great rest of your
weekend! ;)
Toodles,

Wow Larry! Way to go my friend! Will give several things you've suggested a
try... Have went through Add/Remove, etc., doing Searches galore, & the
kicker is this! Nothing seems to be installed in any way so-far! After my
Searches, I've chosen to Uninstall/Delete, & I keep getting the message:
"Cannot remove this File"... Arggg!!! Thanks a bunch & I'll give some of your
goodies a try for sure, makes sense... ;) Take Care! Top of the weekend to ya.

Hi "antioch"!
No my friend, I haven't... Matter of fact, it never dawned on me... ;p
But, if it'll help get this stuff, (notice I cleaned that word up? LOL j/k),
out of my puter, cool! Thanks so much for you tidbit, it's appreciated... ;)

Here is a tool that might help:

RegScanner v1.20
Copyright (c) 2004 - 2005 Nir Sofer
Web Site: http://www.nirsoft.net

Description
===========

RegScanner is a small utility that allows you to scan the Registry, find
the desired Registry values that match to the specified search criteria,
and display them in one list. After finding the Registry values, you can
easily jump to the right value in RegEdit, simply by double-clicking the
desired Registry item.

Great tool for finding all of the AOL references at once.

Howdy Bruce!
Your the second person to tell me this, geez... :) But! Someone about 3
yrs. ago got a new Gateway w/the same deal in it this one does, & said the
only way he got rid of it soon was to do this exact same suggestion... Geez!
Is there no end to AOL's pushiness?! Good Lord! Thanks so much & have
yourself a grand rest of your weekend! :)

Whoa Richard! That sounds like what I've been wanting to do, but was just
plain old afraid to go this route, (this is my first experience w/Windows XP,
just left from 98SE!) Thank you so very much, gonna give it a go tonight!
Take care & hope your Labor Day's a grand one for sure! :)

Last I looked, PC Bug Doctor (available for free for trial from
www.download.com) will go through your computer and delete any
fragments of programs you've removed. CCleaner (CrapCleaner) also
from download.com does the same thing, just not as thoroughly.

Also get RegCleaner from download.com

(it doesn't hurt to run several programs one at a time.)

So first step would be to delete any references to AOL and its
tentacles (seriously) from your Add/Remove list in the Control Panel.
Then delete all references from your Startup menu (Start
button/Run/msconfig/Startup tab)

Once you have all visible elements deleted, run RegCleaner (the kind,
gentle approach, which LISTS all the registry and dll and an infinite
variety of other items you will pick to delete.

Once you've run RegCleaner, proceed with

Crap Cleaner
then

PC Bug Doctor

If you can afford to buy stuff, you can't beat Registry Washer.

As for the 10,000 AOL icons on your desktop, that's what drawing boxes
around them and Shift Del is about.

Delete them!

Good luck, and let me (us) know how it goes!

When you don't see the program in your Add/Remove applet,

a simple way to do it is to literally go into your Program Files
directory and actually delete all related folders.

Then allow the previously mentioned "clean-up" utilities
RegCleaner
Registry Washer
Crap Cleaner
PC Bug Doctor

etc

to clean up the scraps, claws, tentacles, fangs, etc.

Good luck!

I don't understand all the bitching and moaning about AOL!

For expensive, filtered, extremely limited access, you can't beat
'em (except mebee with a baseball bat).

I love AOL so much I have 3 accounts on my one machine!

seriously,

Remember "Compuserve?"

I just went in to "look" at what they were offering, not realizing
that if you "opened the door" and "looked", there was no door handle
on the inside! You were stuck! And once you opened the door, you
were signed up!

They were one of the early "providers" who would STEAL your
information off your computer.

I literally had to unplug my computer from the wall (power and phone)
to disconnect, and THEN I had to format.

And then I didn't realize for 6 months that I'd signed up.

Did they pay me back the $40 a month for 6 months?

hehehehe!

right!

Is there no end to AOL's pushiness?! Good Lord!

The only folk I've seen who are more pushy than AOL are Microsoft!

And Bill Gates & Co are still violating anti-trust laws.

tsk tsk.

Try Microsoft ISP service, and it's MORE filtered than AOL! And as
expensive!

;-)

didn't know that, didja?

Try getting Microsoft "preferred" isp service, and then try getting in
here with Agent!

You can't! Microsoft "doesn't offer Usenet!" If you sign up for
Microsoft, you lose Usenet, and as expensive as Microsoft is, you have
to go some place ELSE for Usenet!

tsk tsk

By the way, Patt! Were you aware that Microsoft owns hotmail, and
they're about to shut it down?

You need to acquire a new e-mail provider!

Thanks so much & have

Well, needless to say, this information is exactly that, informative! I thank
you for your comments & suggestions, & believe me when I tell you that the
only connection I have w/MSN is some Group Activity, but my main reason for
coming here w/my request for help is because I've needed it, & I'm still
"plucking" AOL's stuff in here out, 1 piece at a time, so far, so good, just
never enough time to completely get the job finished, but I'ma tryin'... lol
Thanks again, & I hope the rest of your weekend is a grand one for sure!
Thanks a Bunch!
Patt
P.S. I am indeed going to check out your suggestions, & thank you for
supplying me w/them... ;)
