As a summer project, my kid was did a fresh install of XP on an older
HP Pavilion. While messing with the display properties settings, he
went into advanced settings for the adapter and uninstalled the driver.
Now after boot up and WinXP starts, the screen goes blank...even in
safe mode.

There must me a way to fix this with the command prompt. As this was
meant as learning exercise, I'd like to know the fix.

can you boot to "safe mode" ?? (tapping F8 while booting will give the menu)

You could try booting to safe mode and then when prompted, opt to use System
Restore.

Try Safe Mode Command Prompt and then at the prompt do:

c:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe [enter]

This will start System Restore. Restore your computer to a date before you
let your kid mess around.

As you cannot, it seems, to even get into Safe mode then you could try
a Repair install (if your XP CD permits this) otherwise you will have
to do a full re-install.
