We are getting rid of our old server and I haven't been
able to reformat the hard drive. Does anyone have any
suggestions?

Penny,

What do you want to install??
How is the hard drive formatted (NTFS or FAT)??
With witch tool did you try to format the hard drive??

Hi Penny:

I'm not sure what the problem you are hitting here is - can you provide any
more details on why you cannot format the old drive? What is the exact
error message that you are seeing? What kind of hardware is involved, and
how is it partitioned? What OS is currently on the server?

If your goal is to completely wipe out the drive - and all tracks to the
data on it - you can try this article:

I would like to use MS-Dos and reformat the C drive. The
computer was our old server and is a domain controller
which I would like to remove. Right now the C drive is
partitioned into four virtual drives. The computer also
has a second hard drive. This second hard drive is a
dynamic drive while the other four are basic drives. I
inadvertently reformated this drive before I realized it
was a dynamic drive, for what ever that is worth. Right
now Windows 2000 Server is installed on this machine and
I would like to revert to Windows 2000 Professional.
Whenever I try to install Window 2000 Professional I get
an inaccessible boot device error. I don't know how to
boot to ms-dos so I can reformat the c drive. Does this
help? If you have any suggestions on how to remove this
computer as a domain controller, that would help too.

Penny,

First save al your data.
Then demote you're domain controller.
Go to start, run
In open type "dcpromo"
Folow the instructions.

If you want to run on Win2000 pro and don't want to have a dual boot machine
you better begin from scratch.

Restart your computer and press del to enter the Bios.
Change the first boot device to CD-rom.
Put the Win2000 pro cd in to the CD-rom drive.
Save and exit.

When asked hit any key to boot from cd.

Set-up Windows 2000.
When you need to Choose the partion to instal Win2000 on first do the
following:
Delete a partions. (if you saved your data on the secondairy hard drive,
only
delete the partions on your primairy hard drive)
Create new partions.
Select the partions to instal Win2000 on.
Follow the instructions.

When Windows is installed manage your disk from the computer management.

I've done everything you have described previously but I
get a blue screen, inaccessible boot device. Windows
server will run just fine. I'm really at a loss.

Penny,

Do you use SCSI devices or other non ATA or IDE devices??? (Harddisk,
CD-rom)

Not knowing what scsi devices or other non ATA or IDE
devices are, I'm going to say yes because as the Windows
2000 Professional tried to load I kept seeing ....scsi
adapter. Is there any other way of knowing for a 'puter
illeterate?

Yes, I have a scsi adapter. The device manager indicates
no conflict with this device and it is working properly.

Penny,

The setup of WIN2000 default loads some SCSI drivers. This doesn't say any
thing.
But it looks like you have a SCSI hard drive connected to a SCSI card not
supported by WIN2000.
In this case you need to know your hardware configuration.
Do you have a brand and model number of your system or is it a clone??
Do you have any documentation of the system???
If WIN2000 server is still running you can go to the device manager and look
for SCSI an RAID controllers. If there are any write down the type numbers.
If you can't find SCSI or Raid controllers you don't have them.

You need to find the drivers for the SCSI-adapter.
If you have the drivers put them on flop.
Boot your system from CD-rom.
When the setup starts watch the botum line.
At one point you have to press F6 or F7 to manualy load SCSI device drivers.
Load the drivers from flop and continiu with the setup.
If all correct you can complete the setup.

R.
My scsi adapter is an Initio Ultra SCSI Host Adapter. My
system is a Gateway GP6-333. This system has been
working fine for years with Windows Server.

I reinstalled the driver for the scsi adapter and still
no success. Windows 2000 begins to start, asks if I want
to repair or install, when I tell it to install it tells
me no hard drives are found.

Installing Windows2000 pro on aGateway GP6-333 with a Initio Ultra SCSI Host
Adapter.

Boot from CD-rom.
When Setup starts directly press "F6".
When prompt press "S" to specify additional device.
Put the floppy whit the Initio Ultra SCSI Host Adapter driver into drive A:
and press enter.
If nesesery specify the correct driver. (if you don't know wich one, you can
load them all but make sure the correct one is loaded)
Continiu the setup.

If you're still not able to install Win 2000 I don't know what the problem
is. Better repost the mesage.

I tried all of those steps you mentioned with no
success. I've given up. I guess Goodwill will get a
computer with Windows 2000 Server. Thank-you for all
your help.
