I purchased windows XP professional and asked a computer
friend to install it for me. He installed his copy on my
computer and gave me my copy back unopened. Since then I
have had some strange problems with my CD drive working
and not working for no apparent reason. Someone
suggested that there may be problems from using my
friends XP program and not my original. I wanted to see
about instructions to uninstall windows and reinstall my
copy. I also plan on upgrading my drive to a DVD burner
at the same time. I was able to backup my documents and
should be ok to start over. I just wanted detailed
instructions to make sure that I do it correctly.

Please see the documented steps on how to format and re-install they are simple to follow if you encounter a problem please drop me an email.

1. Insert your Windows XP CD

3. Press the key specified to enter your BIOS. In most cases you need to press Del to enter the BIOS setup. You should see a message on startup, right in the beginning, which says something like “press <key> to enter setupâ€. E.g. Press Del to enter setup
4. Go into either the Boot section, if you have one, or the 2nd option (should be something like “BIOS features setup†or “Advanced BIOS featuresâ€)
5. Change to boot sequence (should show as “boot sequence†or first boot device; 2nd boot device; 3rd boot device; etc.) so that CD-ROM is first
6. Exit saving changes

8. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press Enter to do a clean install

Regards,

Can you format the C: drive from the setup screen then?

What happens when you come to activate xp again? For
example If you have already activated it once (from a
genuine XP disk) and then reinstalled (and formatted) do
you need to re-activate?

I would doubt your problem is related to which XP CD was used for installing
XP. It is most likely a hardware problem. Which version of XP Pro did your
friend use and what version did you purchase. There are three readily
available versions of XP, Retail XP full and upgrade and OEM. The important
part of your concern would be if he used your CD key or his or some other
key.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
