Uninstall problem: Why does XP not use setupx.dll ?

I installed an old program, supposedly compatible with NT (and therefore XP),
that I just tried to uninstall but got an error. I discovered that the
uninstall string makes reference to a Win9x method, that of using "rundll
setupx.dll," which parses an .ini file. But I see that XP only uses rundll32,
and furthermore, doesn't have setupx.dll in its system files at all.

Would it be begging trouble to amend the Registry entry to change "rundll"
to "rundll32" and copy my Win98SE version of setupx.dll into my XP system32
directory? Or is there another method to be preferred?

A program compatible with Windows NT is not necessarily compatible with
Windows XP. Before installation it should be confirmed that the program
will run on XP. I would not fool around with the registry. I take it that
Add/Remove Programs does not work?

That is correct, it doesn't. The program is a shareware desktop settings
saver written in 1997 and says it's compatible with NT 4.0.

Incidentally, I do have considerable experience with Registry settings so
I'm not afraid to do anything in there. But for the life of me I can't find
anywhere that answers the question of what danger is incurred by running
setupx.dll in XP.
