On my regular XP installation I have a windows-folder on 17 GB containing
30-40 folders called something like "$Uninstall" cosnuming a LOT of space.

I am now running out of diskspace, and want to delete some of these folders,
will that make any problems for me?

No. Those are the files needed in case you want to uninstall a hot fix or
update. If you're sure you won't want to do that, you can get rid of them.

The only downside I know of and experienced is that when you go to windows
update, you won't be able to get a list of installed fixes on your computer
because it uses that list to determine them.
Personally, I just zipped them up and stuck them to one side on a CD; you
never know <g>.

If the space they occupy is meaningful to you, I respectfully submit that
the little bit of space you get from deleting them isn't meaningful; you
really need more hard drive space.

If your computer is running fine and is not having problems with any of the
updates then you can go ahead and delete the $Uninstall folders. They are
folders created for removing the patches and service packs that you get from
microsoft update. Another thing you may do is download ccleaner and run
cleaner with it to remove all other temporary files. Here is a link.

To add to the other posts, Doug Knox has a utility on his site to automate
the removal of those uninstall files and their respective entries in
add/remove programs.

Caution: Do not delete or remove the $hf_mig$ folder. It's needed for
future updates.

I doubt removing these uninstall files will save you GB's of space. You
need to look where the space is being used. My windows folder occupies
about 2.5GB so 17GB is a huge amount.
