Unexpected switch to desktop

I have been having a problem in which the computer switches unexpectedly to the desktop from any active window. I can only stay on an active window as long as I am actively doing something. I don't (at least as far as I know) have any other applications running. This doesn't seem to make any sense. Even while typing this message, I had to click back on this window several times to complete the message!

I downloaded SpyBot S&D, which worked to fix the problem. Almost the same number of adware warnings still appear on Symantec's Virus Alert, however, but I'm grateful to have control back. Thanks!
