Unexpected shutdowns

My PC has, in the past week or so, inexplicably shut down and restarted
itself: no
warning messages are given, the restart is normal, and I have no idea even
where to start looking for a possible cause.
My processor is not overheating, I have been doing different and unrelated
things on each occasion, and I have not installed/uninstalled any hardware or
software in this time.
I am usually ok sorting out software problems but something is triggering
these shutdowns and I would be grateful if someone could give me just one or
two pointers where to start.
I am on a fully updated Windows XP HE, 1.8 Athlon processor, 1gb Ram, 120 gb
hd,
64mb nvidia graphics (I'm not a gamer), Audigy Sound Card - a fairly old but
upto now perfectly reliable PC. Hibernation is set off, and all Power
Options to never.
Any help greatly appreciated

It could be a failing power supply, failing RAM, or other hardware.

Firstly, set it to not automatically restart on error. Right click My
Computer | Properties | Advanced Tab | Startup and Recovery - Settings |
Untic Automatically restart | Ok out. Next time it should go to a blue
screen - BSOD it's called - with an error message. Copy the error message
and particularly the error code starting with 0x....... and four parameters
after it exactly.

Research the error code here.

Rock: many thanks for quick reply and suggestions. I'll do exactly what you
suggest and perhaps come back for further guidance if/when this happens
again. Maybe I
should have mentioned that the screen goes black when this has happened,
totally
without warnning nor any kind of message to help.
Regards - Mike

Could be the power supply.
