Unexpected shutdowns on laptop - XP home edition

Hi, can anyone help with this one please?

I have a toshiba satellite laptop with xp home ed. Atfer
the machine has been on for about 20 mins, it shuts down
for no apparent reason. I have checked for virus'
etc...none detected; I have tried system restore to an
earlier date but no joy.

This machine is very rarely used so I am not sure what is
causing the problem...I have checked my power settings
etc and they are ok.

Any help (without too much computer jargon pls) will be
appreciated.

On battery or mains? Are your fans OK? Is it sitting on a carpet
that blocks underside ventillation? Does it feel hot on your lap?
