Suddenly I get message 'Windows - no disk' with options to 'continue...try
again...cancel' half way through boot up. This has never occurred before and
is annoying. I'm running XP and wonder what's going on. I have no windows
disk and never have had. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Greetings,

Ian.

Greetings,

Ian.

Perhaps your hd has bit the proverbial dust. If there's no restore CD,
there's probably a partition on the hd with the required files, but if
the hd is hosed, it won't do you much good. You might call the
manufacturer of the system and ask for options, or look through the many
archived posts here:

Is the hard drive detected in the BIOS? Download a drive diagnostic utility
from the drive manufacturer's web site. This will create a bootable floppy
or CD. Boot from that and run the diagnostics.

Hi. Did you ever get an answer to this? I suddenly have the sampe problem
and am using XP on an emachines computer. It does it at boot up and also
when I try to access my itunes library.

Both of you need to provide more info. Elmo and I were just guessing
because the info provided was so scarce. Ellen, when you say it occurs at
boot up when exactly in the boot cycle does this occur, how is the message
displayed, what's the exact text, and how do you get past the error since
your message implies you can still run XP.

Same when you access the iTunes library. How do you access he library?
When exactly does the error occur, the exact text and how is it displayed
such as in a windows box, if yes is there a heading, etc. How do you get
around it?

What troubleshooting steps have you taken? When did the problem start? Did
they both start at the same time? What changes occurred right before the
problem started in hardware and software? Have you contacted iTunes tech
support? Did you try a system restore to a date right before the problem
started? What is the malware status of the computer and how do you check it
for malware?

I am a "non-techie" so have done my best to diagnose. It occurs at start
up
at the Windows blue welcome screen and also when I try to access any file
from my itunes library or try to synch the ipod. The message is in a
windows
box with the heading "Windows-No Disk" . In the box it says " Please
insert
a disk into drive. And then the three option buttons are cancel, try
again,
and continue. I just bang on the 3 of them about 10 times and it
eventually
goes past at start up. When in explorer or itunes and trying to start a
song
it occurs. Sometimes I can bang the boxes to get past it, but usually I
have
to to Control/Alt/Delete. It then will say that itunes is not responding,
and I have to shut it down to get by. My music, as well as the itunes
programs are on an external hard drive. I have defragmented and checked
for
bad segments and corrupted files on both the C and the K drive. I have
taken
the itunes software off and re-installed. Any ideas?

Ok, that's a lot more information. Let's start by booting into safe mode.
Reboot the computer and as it restarts and the BIOS splash screen disappears
repeatedly tap the F8 key until the advanced options menu appears. It will
have several choices including Safe Mode. Choose that one. It will boot
slightly differently but eventually bring you to the welcome screen. Login
to your account. Does the error occur now?

Also a couple other questions. What kind of computer do you have and what
is the operating system? When did this problem first appear? Did the
problem appear at startup and with the iTunes library at the same time?

Do you get the message in SAFE MODE?

I haven't seen this particular message myself, but..

The Windows disk would be where windows is installed, it seems to be
saying it can't find your windows installation, but you must have windows
installed on a drive other than C:, otherwise you would get the "no system
disk" message.

Have you added/removed any HDDs, or moved the connections internally, do
you have a flash drive connected at time of boot?

Are all of your HDDs seen by the BIOS, usually you will see your drives
listed when the computer first starts.
