unetworked fax and XP computer share phone line

can anyone help us? Our external fax wakes up our XP
computer and there is no network connection between them .
They do however share the same phone line. Can we avoid
this?

Your PC is probably set to automatically answer an incoming message
(fax) on the phone line.

Control Panel > Printers and Other Hardware > Phone and Modem Options.
Select Modems tab.
Click Properties, then select the Power Management tab.
UNcheck the box that says "Allow this device to bring the computer out
of standby."
OK your way out.
