I inadvertently hit some keys and now my wordsa are coming out in Red and underlined. Any idea waht I did and how to undo it?

Two possibilities:
1) more likely you checked "Track changes while editing" box in Tools/Track changes. Return and uncheck the box.
2) less likely you formatted the default font to be red and underlined. That would be too much, right? ;-)

You've enabled change tracking. Go to Tools | Track Changes and turn it off
(you can accomplish the same thing by double-clicking TRK on the status
bar). Note, however, that this does not remove the markup that has already
been applied. To do that you have to accept all the changes (from the Accept
Change menu on the Reviewing toolbar in Word 2002/2003--not sure how you do
it in earlier versions).
