Does anyone have good info out there about Windows XP file permissions? I
totally understand Windows 2000 and Linux, but on XP it seems like you don't
have the same attributes. All you get is "read only" and "hidden." I don't
see anyway to add users like IUSER, Administrator, etc...

On top of that, there are bugs with XP over a network where some files
become locked, and only a trip to regedit will resolve this. Also, every
folder is marled as "read only" if you view properties. Read only to whom??

In XP Pro, go to Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View and uncheck
Use simple file sharing. Now you'll see the familiar Windows 2000 style
permissions.

For XP Home you have to boot to the Administrator account in Safe Mode to
see these permissions properties.

If this is XP Home, it only has a Simple File Sharing method, and that
is also turned on by default in XP Pro. So if you have Pro, go to
Folder Options - View and uncheck 'Use Simple File Sharing' when things
(on an NTFS drive of course) will be effectively the same as in Win2000

OMG!!! Thanks guys! I feel dumb now! For two years I've used WindowsXP and
never knew how to get the REAL security tab!
