6 month old system: 160 GB HDD, 1 GB RAM, 2.6 GHz Athlon
running XP Home. PC power supplied by high-capacity UPS.
Several times while working on the computer it has shut
down and immediately restarted, with no user input. There
appears no common time when this occurs, or common
program being used. The only comment is that it seems to
happen more often when on the Internet.
A friend here has experienced the same problem with XP
Home, but on a laptop.
Has anybody any idea why this is happening, and how to
stop it?

There are too many places to start.

1) Have you aplied all relivant patches to your system?
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
2) Do you have Anti-virus software - No? get and install some
3) Do you have anti-spyware installed No? get and install AdAware
and/or SpyBot
4) Do you have a firewall installed? At least use the built in
XP service if nothing else
5) Update your BIOS and MB drivers to the latest stable version
6) Get PC health monitoring software to make sure your system is
not overheating
7) Uninstall unecessary software
8) De-fragment you system drive

Any or all of these things cound be applicable. Because of your
systems I would lean twards a hardware issue, but everything on
the list is reasonably safe and will only help you out in the
long run.

Disable automatic restart on error: R click my Comp, Properties,
Advanced tab, Shutdown & Recovery - Settings, System Failure - uncheck
Automatically restart. This will now give a blue screen on errors with
codes that can be referenced to failures as per Jake's web page. Another
area is to check your UPS drivers & s/w to see if that's not the cause.
