This may seem like a trivial (hopefully) question to all you experts out
there, but im have just been introduced to windows/exchange server 2003 and i
am confused.

The problem: In my company here (v small) we used to get our email using
POP3 from our ISP. Now the boss decided to get a server and i set up exchange
to collect the email. I set up addresses for all the users here and email
gets sent and received perfectly. However there are other emails that are
supposed to be coming in that noone is receiving - eg emails addressed like
'(e-mail address removed)' and '(e-mail address removed)'.

The old way, they used to go to a catchall address and someone could get
them that way. I used message tracking and saw that they came in, an NDR was
created but after that - nothing. Does anyone know how i can retrieve these
emails? Or where they are? Is there a way to set up a catchall account?

I have tried googling and reading a couple of books [found lots of
information but not what im looking for!] but no success yet. Im forced to
resort to begging for help!

Thanks.

I have checked the POP3 failed mail folder and there is nothing there. i have
checked the exchange BadMail folder and there doesnt seem to be any relevant
messages there. When tracking the 'lost' messages it doesnt say where they
are but it gives messageid's. The SystemMailbox mailbox on the mailbox page
of the exchange server properties seems to contain 400 messages though. Could
my messages be there? And if they are, any way of accessing them?

Your help would be appreciated.
Thank you

Hi - this is an Outlook newsgroup - your question belongs in an Exchange
group. However, I'm replying & have set the followup to
microsoft.public.exchange.admin.

Exchange doesn't collect mail (that implies you're fetching it, rather than
having it delivered to you). What version of Exchange do you run, and are
you using a POP conector? Those are not recommended. I presume you have your
own domain name...see http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/MF002.html for
info on hosting your own mail (you can do this even without a static IP -
and even without an always-on connection).
I set up addresses for all the
users here and email gets sent and received perfectly. However there
are other emails that are supposed to be coming in that noone is
receiving - eg emails addressed like '(e-mail address removed)' and
'(e-mail address removed)'.

Assign those addresses to something. Either assign them as secondary
addresses for Joe Bloggs, or set up a mail-enabled public folder, or a
shared mailbox, etc and set permissions so all the users you wish can
see/use these. Or use distribution lists. You have many options.
The old way, they used to go to a catchall address and someone could
get them that way.

But you have better options now :)

Yes, if you're on E2k/2003, but I don't recommend it. Your server *should*
issue NDR for misaddressed mail. Think of the various addresses you
use/publicize, and assign them to objects in Exchange as needed.

Catchall addresses mean someone has to spend a lot of time going through
spam to find the one message they want. And it's the recipient's
responsibility to address mail correctly. If you have a user with a commonly
misspelled name, add the common misspelling to his/her mailbox - as in,
(e-mail address removed) could also receive mail to (e-mail address removed). Etc.
I have tried googling and reading a couple of books [found lots of

Naw, newsgroup posting isn't begging. It's just good sense.
Again, future Exchange questions really belong in more relevant groups. Best
of luck.
