Unauthorized visitor in Contacts List

I run what I believe is a 'tight ship', and had turned
off messenger service long ago. Nonetheless, I had a
new, unapproved entry show up in my Contact List yesterday
that spammed me with a few chat windows of garbage. I
deleted the contact several times, it reappeared each
time, and then I finally blocked it in options to end
the 'visit'.

All patches up-to-date, no spyware, no viruses. Have I
missed something new in the Messenger security area?

Greetings,

You may have gotten one of these because with some older default settings, anyone can send
you a message via Messenger without actually being on your contact list. However, you can
change this behavior by opening up the main Messenger window, click Tools, then Options, then
the Privacy tab, click 'All other users' (in Windows Messenger 4.x), 'All users' (in MSN
Messenger 5/6) or 'Other .NET Messenger Service Users' (in Windows Messenger 5) and then
click the Block >> button.

JK,
My primary concern was that someone had been added to my
contacts list without authorization. Would these settings
permit an unauthorized user to show up in my contact
list? I closed Messenger twice, thinking I had a
transient situation, but my visitor proved to be
very 'sticky'.

Thanks for you input. I'll institute the 'block others'
environment immediately.
