When i log into windows, under any user account, the comuter restarts
itself
after about an hour or so. It also restarts when i use internet
explorer/windows update. if i start my computer and just leave it after
an hour it restasrts, but i i i use internet explorer right away or
anytime after i startup, it restarts. I don't see anything out of the
ordinary is the proccesses that are running. Does anyone know what
might be wrong or how i could
fix it? Thanks in advance.

Hi

Have a look in the Event Viewer for any 'Errors'.

Also - if you don't see any error messages, right click on My Computer,
select
Properties and then the Advanced tab. Click on Settings under Startup and
Recovery and disable 'Automatically restart'. Next time your PC reboots,
you should see a Blue Screen. Could you please post the Stop Code that
accompanies that BSOD back here? With that your problem could be isolated.

Could be many different things...

I am going to say you probably have a virus due to the trigger effect
that explorer seems to have. And the time period being consistant, but
it could be many things...

Check for viruses, provided you can run the computer long enough for a
scan.

Could be file/folder problems... If you schedule a disk check and
restart that might help

Could be errors with the hardware or software as mentioned above.

Could be that your bios is picking up errors and halting too, check
your bios settings throughly.

Let us know what you find...

Windows XP has a default setting to "Restart on failure"

Right click on "My Computer" and select Manage.
Expand the Event Viewer category and look through each of the three sub-categories for the red
flagged error records. The date and time of these should correspond to your restarts. Double
click on an error record to see the details of the error.

Change this restart behavior:

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Advanced. In the Startup and Recovery section,
click on the "Settings" button to open the Startup and Recovery window. In the System Failure
section, uncheck "Automatically restart", Click "Apply", "OK"

After that change the computer will no longer restart when a system failure occurs. Instead it
will probably throw up a "Blue Screen Of Death" with a STOP error message and then halt
completely, requiring a manual power off and restart (or reset if it has a hardware reset
switch). The contents of the STOP error message will give a specific clue as to the underlying
cause of the problem.

Don't be suprised, if after changing the setting, things appear to run just fine.
Some errors are so minor that they will only show up in the Event logs and not produce a BSD.
However, they would still evoke the restart if the setting were changed back to the default.
