unattended backups?

I need XP to perform an automatic, untattended backup during offpeak
hours. I don't care about compression of files etc. I just need certain
folders copied to an external hard drive, orverwriting the older
versions there already.

I haven't had much luck with the built-in XP backup utility, since all
it does is starting the wizard with the message "welcome to the backup
utility, click NEXT to continue". This won't work, b/c I am not there
to click NEXT.

I would appreciate any help on this.

Well, I'm not sure what your objection would be to clicking "Next" to
configure this. There's an option to turn off the wizard and use the classic
interface, but if you aren't familiar with NTBackup already, as is clear
from your post, it might make more sense for you to check it out via the
wizard.

If that doesn't appeal to you, and all you want to do is copy files, you
could look into a batch file running something like robocopy from the MS
resource kit. And then schedule the batch file to run unattended using task
scheduler.

The backup program supplied with Windows XP is rudimentary, at best.

You should get something like Roxio's Backup MyPC 2006 at
http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/b...=Paid Search&gclid=CM2M-KWJqYcCFR1sWAodsDlAbQ

or CMS's Bounceback Professional at
http://www.cmsproducts.com/product_bounceback_software.htm

These are "real" backup programs, and are not crippled like the one
supplied. I use these both on different computer and they will do all you
want, and more.

You NEED to go here and buy Second Copy:

http://www.centered.com

I've used it for YEARS and it's flawless.

You can even save backups of backups, just in case.

I think Uplus Sync can well work as your will. It can automatic
synchronize folders as soon as the usb driver inserted. And this
process can be specified to the selected driver only. Visit the website
for more info http://www.uplussync.com

Thanks a lot, everyone. I have tried Winbackup before, and it sufferred
from the same drawbacks and it's functionality was not different from
the built-in utility. So I will check out the products you recommended.

The functionality I am asking about - having the backup done every
night while I am not at the computer and not asking for any feedback
before proceesing (b/c I am not there) - is arguably the only
functionality one needs to get backups done. Hey, I would even be happy
with "copy c:\mydir e:\my dir" (where e: is an external hard disk) if I
could shedule this to run automatically, and overwrite all old copies
of files on e:
