hi..i have a 80GB slave harddrive that has important data on it and in disk
management it shows as unallocated drive with NO drive letter...How can i
bring this drive back to a drive letter to access data...I can find only two
choices: 1) to partition drive ( will i loose any data) or convert to
dynamic...(cant be this one)...any help is appreciated.

Dont run either one,try going to run, type:diskmgmt.msc In msc,L.click on
the drive,then go to actions,all,select,make drive active,close-out,restart
computer.

action pull down menu, all tasks, I DONT HAVE SELECT... only new partition

Really strange problem here...how were you able to put data on it if it's
unallocated??
Usually a drive has to partitioned and formatted in order for you to write
to it.

Hi,

How did this happen? The manner of fixing it greatly depends on what went
wrong to begin with. Making it active is not the answer.

sorry....when I said I dont have SELECT...I meant I cant select MAKE DRIVE
ACTIVE, as it is NOT an option listed there. Where can I find this option...

to be honest...I was in diskmanagement and was trying to change drive letter
when phone rang...when i looked back at screen...it was unallocated....not
sure what I hit...but it didnt seem to serious as I was doing it...I wouldnt
delete any partions (I dont think) or anything crazy like that...let me know
if I can give you any other info..

thanks Rick...I used cg security and made a log of my actions and sent it to
them...in their utility I could see the files on the drive but could copy
them to new drive...hopefully...they can lend some advice to get the files
backed up ....its a ray of hope since i can still see the files..just need to
access them...thanks again

I've found testdisk to be very useful as well. Glad it helped.

Hi all,

First post here and I really worried.
I have a Lacie external drive which I normally connect to my Mac - no problems.

Tried to connect it to my Windows 7 pc to transfer some files and it wasn't recognised. It installs the drivers and says its ready to use, but doesn't appear as a drive. So I read about it and the advice was to go to Computer Management - Disk Managment and mark drive 1 / partition as active and then assign a drive letter. So I did that and then Windows tells me that I must format the drive to use it.
Obviously I don't want to as I can't loose my data - my wedding pictures are on the drive!

So I've plugged the Lacie back into my mac, and the drive is unusable and says I need to format too. Even the repair function doesn't work.

Now I've read the above post and downloaded Test Disk (I'm working off my mac though as I know the drive worked and all my files where added from the Mac).
Its currently Anaylsing the cylinder but its taking a long time.

I've read the help guide but once this stage completes, having read the next few steps, I'm lost.

Any ideas on what might have happened and what I need to do next?
I'll report back once its finished its 'deeper search' and analysing.

Thanks in advance,
Nick
