When I visit \\computername\folder in My Computer, the folder loads
and I can read / write to it without any problems what-so-ever.

When, however, I try to do "net use z: \\computername\folder", I find
that I can't. I get prompted for login info, which I provide, and
then I get this error:

System error 5 has occurred.

Access is denied.

The fact that I have to login, in the first place, strikes me as
fairly odd since, as I observed, earlier, I don't have to login when
doing it from My Computer...

Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

I suspect that your first method relies on a remembered
connection with a cached password.
