Hi,

I have an HP/Compaq DC7600 pc with 80GB SATA, and 1GB Ram which is running a
windows2000 SP4, I have tried to upgrade my OS to windowsXP but the setup
says - "WindowsXP setup doesn't support upgrading from windows 2000Pro to
windowsXPpro" - why? I have checked MS site and it clearly mentioned W2K can
easily upgreadable to windowsXP, tried several CDs and finally bought an OEM
version of XP pro with SP2 and that also same. Please some one can guide me
whats wrong here

You need the retail version of WinXP, not the OEM Version,
in order to upgrade from Windows 2000.

Dear,
Oh no, what to do - I have already opened and tried, retailer will not take
back this(already opened) - I have a Retail version XP Pro which is for
different pc(already installed over there), can I install that CD but, is it
possible to change the cd key to OEM CDkey after the installation?

pls advise

That's true for WinXP Pro only. You cannot upgrade Win2K to WinXP Home.

tried several CDs and finally bought an OEM version of XP pro with SP2

Note that OEM versions are meant for clean install only. You cannot use
any OEM version for upgrade. However, if this is a SB version (System
Builder), you *might* be lucky. Although SB versions do not allow for
an upgrade when booting from that CD, some SB versions allow for
upgrading when starting under running Windows.

Nope. You cannot activate a Retail version with an OEM product key.

Yes you can change the key after an install.

Again, you can neither install nor activate a Retail version
using an OEM product key. Why don't you try it out.

Hi Anver,

Backup critical data in case problems occur. You're going to have to install
twice. The OEM disk needs to be at the same or higher level service pack
than the retail XP Pro disk.

Upgrade using the retail disk and product key, do not activate. Then,
immediately run a repair installation with the OEM disk and product key,
then you should be able to activate it. Done properly, accounts, settings,
and files should remain intact. But, as already mentioned, backup, backup,
backup before you begin.

Thanks Tony,
That KB article worked like a charm, In fact I wasted my money of purchasing
an XP OEM CD, My PC itself there is an XP Pro OEM code. Any how thanks man.

I don't know why 'Detler Dreyer' is posting the same answer - But Mr. Tony's
reply worked, thanks Rick and Pegasus.

Well, something is not quite true here. All OEM versions *NEVER* do an
upgrade. They install a FULL version and overwrite anything in the
partition where you do the install. You don't need a prior version when
installing an OEM version as the OEM version never checks and wipes
everything out to do a NEW install.

I also have a similar problem, probably a little more complicated.

I purchased a refurbished IBM Thinkpad by mail-order from the US while I
was overseas with the US Army (the thinkpad I took with me got crushed
while we were going north).

The "new" thinkpad has XP Pro version 2002 pre-installed.

I recently tried to install SP2 & it abended with a message something
like an invalid product key. I'll try it again to see if I can get the
exact message, but in the meantime ...

I went to IBM's web site and according to their product info based on
type and model number, this particular computer should be pre-loaded
with XP home. And the Microsoft Product ID label on the bottom IS for XP
home.

I prefer XP Pro & would like to keep it & install SP2.

How do I go about doing this?

Anver said:
Yes it worked, I have activated and later installed SP2 aswell.

Double-check with this utility if the Product Key does match the
first digits of the new (OEM) Product Key being used:
"XP Info": http://www.licenturion.com/xp/xpinfo-exe.zip

If this is the case, see the posting of "Vanguard" in this thread.
Most likely, your CD was a SB version rather than (genuine) OEM.
