Unable to uninstall device

I got a new Ethernet card however the old one still shows under device
manager and I have not been able to uninstall it... the error appears that
the
device may be required to boot up the computer. I tried in safe Mode with
the same results. Even physically installing the card again and then
deleting did not help. Trying to remove all instances in the registry I
get an error that the keys cannot be removed. I have disabled it in device
manager but would like to uninstall it. My setup is Windows XP home and all
patches are up to date.
Thanks and I will be grateful for any help.

You can remove it in the registry easy enough. However, certain keys
where the information is located (ENUM for example) must be given the
proper permissions first. Log on as Administrator. When you come
across a key that refuses to be deleted, click "EDIT" and then click
"PERMISSIONS". Set the key permissions to "FULL CONTROL" and then
delete.

BE SURE to make a full backup first!

Thanks so much, that did the trick! I appreciate the help.
