Unable to start XP

Dear All,
I have a computer that developed an interesting problem last week.
Firstly the CD ROM drive failed to read and write CD's. It was 3 years
old. OK, that's easy - replace it.
Within a day the computer suffered a major crash. I rebooted it, it
started up as normal, got as far as the welcome screen, gave me a one
second flash of the desktop wallpaper then proceeded to close down,
logging off the network and showing a screen asking me to turn off or
hibernate the computer.

No amount of tweaking, trying to start in safe mode, last good
configuration would allow me to start the computer. I ran recovery
console from the CD ROM of XP, ran chkdsk, all checked out well. Using
DIR I could see all my data. I removed the offending CD ROM drive, no
joy. BTW I run NAV, anti-spyware and windows and a Broadband router
firewall on my system. A virus check one day before the occurrence
showed no infections.

Any ideas what has gone on guys?

Regards

I had a simular problem a few years ago it was with a IBM pc and it had to so
with the hd jumpers the cd was set as a slave and the hd was set as cable
select and it was the first drive in the chain and the cd was second i set
the hd to master and the cd to slave and it worked you might take a look at
that.

How did you run the XP CDrom? [If it won't Read.]
What is the EXACT Error message you get?

The machine had TWO CD drives (one a DVD reader also), only one had
failed. I was able to set the BIOS to boot up from a bootable CDROM 1st,
to allow me to boot up.

Concerning the faulty drive, it appeared in explorer, but any known good
disc placed in it failed to read. Similarly I could not save data to a
blank CD-R disc. The error message was: "please insert disc into drive:
e"

Your thoughts much appreciated.

Are steps taken (in your initial post) listed in chronological order? The
start failure happened Before you removed the CD player? (Physically)
You may have knocked something loose, otherwise.

Yes in chronological order, the start failure occurred before I opened
the cabinet.
