After hanging when switching off, now cannot get windows
XP home to launch when switching on - boot sequence runs
scandisk, says it's ok, and then gets into a 'unable to
open windows' loop in any of the options - start windows
normally, use last good profile or safe mode. Any
suggestions?
Windows XP home was pre-installed when computer was
purchased so unfortunately don't have CD. From another PC,
I've formated a system floppy so can get to c:\ in dos. Is
there a command to launch Windows from a dos prompt?
Thanks.

No there isn't. What you could try is to get the basic bootable floppy
set (6 floppies) as an image download at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;310994
and see if you can recovery things from the recovery console it will
provide (in an XP machine do a search in Help and Support on "Recovery
Console Commands"). You might find that the method given at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;307545
would work.

Other than that, without a bootable XP CD you are stuck with whatever
means the makers supplied of reverting to ex-factory state.
