unable to shut down

I have an HP Pavillion A520 N. Lately, when I try to shut down, the screen
freezes. Ctrl-alt-del doesn't work and I have to manually turn off the power.
I went to the support site and it said to dwnld sp2. I have that and I even
double checked by looking in the add/remove programs application and sp2 and
a bunch of other security updates were listed.Trying restart is unsuccessful
as well. What's the next troubleshooting step?
