My PC at the office is running Windows XP.
My email client is Microsoft Outlook 2002.

I created a folder under the "Contacts" folder in Outlook.
Under this folder I created entries for every member of my project
team.
I named this folder "project_team".

When I attempt to send an email and use "project_team" as the value for
the "To:" field, I receive an error stating that "project_team" is an
invalid email address.

Is it somehow possible to send an email address to a "group name" ?
(ie. some kind of contact list or distribution list)

You should have created a DL for this purpose, not a folder. You can't send
a message to a folder. Instead you select all its members from the Outlook
Address Book.
Even a DL will not place the name of the group in the To: field , however.
It will expand to reveal all the addresses it contains.
