Replace the possibly defective CD Drive. Should be less than $30 to get one
at a local computer store, wal-mart, etc. Might even get a DVD reader or
writer (which writes CDs as well) for a little more.

Try reading a professionally made data CD, such as the XP CD, MS Office CD,
any Norton or McAfee CD, etc.

If you can read them, but not home-made CDs, then the problem is likely the
format of the CD.

If you can not read professional made data CDs, then get a new CD reader.

Assuming you can read professionally made CDs, the home-made CD might have
one or more of the following problems:

1. It was not closed or finalized. Such a CD can only be read in a CD
writer with similar software to the one that made it.
2. It was made with packet writing software, such as UDF, DLA, Direct CD.
Such CDs require associated reader software to be installed. Most firms
that sell CD writing software offer free readers for their flavor of packet
writing.
3. It was made in a non-windows foramt. This is rare, but UNIX or LINUX
and windows do not have 100% compatibnility.

For any of the above it was written wrong type problems there is one simple
work-around: Download and install ISOBUSTER. It can read nearly every CD
format, and has multiple modes of reading, some beyond those native to XP.
Its basic functions are free, but its advanced functions are shareware (not
free).
