Unable to Read CD on initial boot

I have an irritating problem that I have had almost from
the outset. If I try to insert a CD or DVD in the tray of
either machine (Sony DRU 500a or Liteon XJ HD166s), the
computer does not recognize it as being there, yet knows
whether it is a DVD or CD. If I reboot with the CD (or DVD)
in either tray, it comes up and recognizes it. This is
driving me crazy and would sure like to correct it. My gut
feeling is that this is a Windows problem rather than an
individual driver problem since this has been going on
before I got the second Liteon Drive. Can anyone help?

Reply: look at MS Knowledgge Base ARticle 303008; I am
experiencing a similar problem, XP is reading ghost file
contents from last CD in the drive; I think my problem
and yours is an XP problem which apparently requires the
CD-RW to be erased and/or reformatted each time you add
new data. I can't believe it requires this. I just
bought a new Toshiba with a CD-RW/DVD using XP and I
upgraded to XP Pro. Was trying to copy Word Perfect data
files on CD-RW on my Dell notebook, to transfer to the
new Toshiba and was getting the exact same problem you
are experiencing when I moved the same CD back and
forth. It may also have to do with how I/you formatted
the CD-RW initially and/or what exact type of CD-RW disc
you purchased, e.g. preformatted and readable in what
type of drive.
