Unable to Ping anyone on the Network

When I try to ping I get " PING: transmit failed, error code 65". I'm still
able to share files with everyone on the network. Network is Peer to Peer
all running XP and the others don't have this problem. Zone Alarm and NAV is
not enabled.

Any clues?

Error 65 usually indicates a firewall problem.
It is either misconfigured or has been incorrectly un-installed.

Un-install any firewall as per the manufacturer's
instructions during troubleshooting.

This can also be caused by the incorrect and
incomplete removal of a firewall.

If you un-install a firewall from add / remove programs,
it can often leave debris behind like rogue services.

For example, if you un-install zonealarm like this,
the TrueVector service may continue to run.

The fix for this is to re-install the firewall and then un-install
it correctly. Consult the manufacturer's website for details.

For example, with ZoneAlarm, you need to go to the
ZA control panel, and un-check 'run at startup'.
Then re-boot, so ZA is no longer running, then un-install it.

Try pinging yourself (127.0.0.1) that will tell you if
there's a internal hardware error. IPCONFIG /all will give
you detailed info about your adapter settings. It is
possible to file and print share without TCP/IP as Windows
has it's own system although it's no longer supported
(NetBEUI). Are you pinging their actual IP address or the
name of the computer? See if you can ping the actual IP
address. If you can, but not the computer name then there
is a problem resolving the host name to the IP address.
Compare your network config to one of the other computers
that is not experiencing this problem to see if you can
resolve.

Thanks again, that fixed the problem. I had set ZA to not run at startup and
thought if it's not running it's not causing a problem. I guess that's not
true, because I turned it back on and removed all firewall Zone Security and
that fixed it.

But why was I still able to "connect" to the other computers on the network
and file share with ZA blocking everything including the print servers?

Cheers,

Diane
