Unable to open Word documents

I recently purchased an Compaq Presario desktop computer with Windows Vista.
It came with the ability to use Microsoft Works instead of Word, therefore I
downloaded Microsoft Word onto my computer thinking that it would solve the
problem that I was having of not being able to open any Word documents that
were sent to me in an e-mail or as an attachment. I even created a resume
using Word and after saving it to my documents, still wasn't able to open it.
The error message that I recieve says Adobe Reader was unable to open resume
because it is either not a supported file type or it has been damaged due to
it being sent either by e-mail or an attachment. Why isn't it automatically
opening up in Word and not Adobe Reader. I have attempted to change my
default to only open documets in Word but it doesn't even give the option to
change it in Word. What should I do?

Hi ny2ga1168--

If Richard's suggestion of associating Word with doc files that should work
doesn't, then please let us know the exact ***number and wording of the
error you're getting when you try to open a word doc. Word is one of the
programs that often can be fixed by matching the specific error number with
the appropriate MSKB.

Also if you have any other Office 2007 program, since I believe what you
meant was you downloaded the trial of Office 2007 from MSFT's office site at
http://office.microsoft.com , again if associating as Richard has told you
to do does not do the trick, try using "Microsoft Office Diagnostics" from
any other Office 2007 that opens at Help>On the Help menu, click Office
Diagnostics.

You could access it this way as well:

Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Access Options, Excel
Options, PowerPoint Options, or Word Options.
Click Resources.
Click Diagnose, click Continue, and then click Start Diagnostics.

***You can also run Office Diagnostics if you cannot open/run an Office
program this way:

If necessary, you can run Office Diagnostics from the Start menu.

In Windows Vista, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft
Office, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office
Diagnostics.

Good luck,

CH

Thanks Richard for you response, I actually was on the phone with an HP
support rep for almost an hour who I granted remote access to my computer.
He tried several times doing what you suggested amongst other things and it
never gave the option to associate doc files with Word. When the list of the
different programs came up Word didn't even show up as one of the options. I
actually downloaded Word from the Microsoft Office Professional disc not from
the trial download on Microsoft's web site as someone else suggested. I
appreciate your suggestion (:>)

Right-click a DOC file, highlight "Open With", then click "Choose Default
Program". This will let you re-associate Word with DOC files.

Chad, thanks for your response. I actually downloaded Word from a Microsoft
Office Professional Disc not the trial from off of the web site. I have also
tried your suggestions and I don't have an option for Microsoft Office in my
all programs list, I do have Microsoft Office Tools but the option of
Microsoft Diagnostic doesn't show. (this might not make sense to you but it
doesn't) I also went to Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, clicked on Help and
Microsoft Diagnostic also isn't one of the options there. I wasn't able to
try your other suggestion of clicking on the microsoft office button, then
clicking access options because again I don't have just a Microsoft Office
Button. I have spent almost an hour with a HP Support Rep who tried several
different things while having remote access to my computer and it still
didn't work.

At the risk of being flamed (again) - I would mention that there is one
alternative that won't cost you a cent, and only a few minutes of your
time. If you install OpenOffice.org, you'll probably find that it will
solve your problems, giving you full access to ms office files.

Hi--

Somehow ny2ga1168 it seems as if your tools didn't completely install
because that is a standard option of Office 2007 tools. I'm not overparsing
your post, but I don't quite understand what you mean when you say you
downloaded Word 2007 from a disc although maybe it was some kind of MSFT
promotional disc you got at a meeting or maybe someone gave it to you--not
sure).

By MSFT Office Button I meant the button on the ribbon with the Office Logo

http://www.cnet.com.au/i/g/240063165/sc012.jpg

I think you have missed the opportunity to run diagnostics in either Excel
or Powerpoint and they don't make this option as easy to find as they could
have and should have. It makes me wonder what the Office teams who are
terribly bright and talented, and have the budget to hire a lot of focus
groups are doing sometimes.

Here's where it is on Excel or Power Point or Access 2007 and many other
Office related apps because I tested it on mine.

Click that button on the upper left with the logo>Click Excel Options Button
at the bottom of the menu on the left>click Resources under Excel or
whatever app's Options>click the button that says "Diagnose" to ther ight of
the phrase "Run Microsoft Office Diagnostics" . I know you have this.

Good luck,

CH

Open Office.org is an excellent alternative and appropriate to mention, and
for most users it has all the functionality they would ever need. It isn't
mentioned enough Ray, and sure I know this is a MSFT group, but I think our
mission is to provide as many options as we can so that people can get their
job/task done well. There are other programs that are now free to make
documents as well like Google Docs and Spread Sheets:

http://www.google.com/google-d-s/intl/en/tour1.html

Also Star Office6 and Easy Office Premium 3
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,71526/article.html

are alternatives although they probably don't compare to Open Office at
http://www.openoffice.org/

Also the OP could uninstall whatever he has and go to
http://office.microsoft.com and install a full functionality Office 2007 Pro
Trial for 60 days which would give him time to ponder alternatives.
