Today I installed Word 2003. I have an XP machine. I was sent a file by the person I do contract work for. They also use Word an XP machine. I have been unable to open their file and need to get the work done by Monday morning. The message I get everytime I try to open the file is

"Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions
*Check the file permissions for the document or drive
*Make sure there is sufficient free memory or disk space
*Open the file with Text Recovery Converter

I tried the suggestions and nothing seems to work. The Text Recovery option paired with the Open and Repair option opens up an unrecognizable file

Can someone please provide some quick feedback

Desperately need help

Just a thought, but did they send you a Word document (*.doc) or possibly a
zipped file of a Word document (*.zip). How are you trying to open the
file?

If it really is corrupt, check out:

Ask the sender to zip the Word document and send it to you again. Copy the
file to your hard drive, unzip and then open it.
Unzipped Word documents are occasionally corrupted by e-mail. This seems to
have occurred here.
If you have Norton AV, uncheck its Office Plug-in as that too can cause
problems.

I ended up calling the help line since I needed to meet a Monday morning deadline.
Turns out I needed to download some upgrades (4 total).
Thanks for your response though.
