Any help is much appreciated. . . My problem is as follows:
When I try to open a document from "My recent documents" or from within a
folder I get the following error: "Unable to open C:\wherever the file is. It
may have been deleted, renamed or moved". The relevant application opens, but
the file does not. I can then open the file as normal from inside the
application. Virus scans and spyware scans have revealed nothing.

You got the answer, you've either deleted, renamed or moved.
Go to Start>Search>and type the file name and see where you put it.

everything in my recent documents are merely shortcuts.
If yuo have done anything to file such as delete, move, rename, etc.; the
short cut no longer is a valid an therefore DOESN"T work.

"Or from within folder" doesn't make sense!! What folder??
If yuor in folder where file is actually located (ie save locasation), it
has to open!!
Are yuo tring to open another shortcut?

Where does the program save the file to? If You open file from that folder,
your doing the same thing the program is doing!!

Maybe I didn't explain well enough. Here is an example. . .
I create a document in word, say doc.doc and save it to my documents. I then
close word. I try and open doc.doc from "My recent documents" and I get the
moved etc error message. The file has not been moved etc.

As an alternative I open My Documents and double click on doc.doc. Word will
open but doc.doc will not.

I then have two options. I can use file, open from word, or I can double
click again on doc.doc in My documents.

Note that althouigh I am using Word as an example this happens with all
files not just those from MS office.

You did. My reply was a side note. As per your issue, try one of the
Word/Office groups beings you didn't mention which other recent documents
weren't opening and good luck!
