What is "Express"? Have you checked access privileges on the file

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

What he wrote was "Excess," but the subject line says Excel.

I don't believe you can open Excel sheets in Word unless they're embedded.
That is, Word can open a Word document with an Excel OLE object embedded but
not an Excel .xls file.

Actually you can open an Excel workbook in Word however it will be
converted to a Word document file type and the Excel data will be
converted to a Word table and all formulas/functions will be converted
to values.

If the Excel workbook is saved then you end up with a Word document
with an *.xls file extension and you'll never be able to open it in
Excel again. Since that is so easy to do I don't recommend doing this.
Especially considering this is one I found out the hard way. :-(

I was judging by the file types listed in the File Open dialog. Obviously
there are some that are not listed that Word *can* open.

Interesting. I have various spreadsheet file types listed in my
File/Open dialog box but I suspect this is due to having various
converter packs installed.

I was pretty sure I had installed every converter available, but perhaps
not.

I have a few from Office 97 and Office 4.3 too. I suspect that has
something to do with it.
