I don't believe you can open Excel sheets in Word unless they're embedded.
That is, Word can open a Word document with an Excel OLE object embedded but
not an Excel .xls file.

Actually you can open an Excel workbook in Word however it will be
converted to a Word document file type and the Excel data will be
converted to a Word table and all formulas/functions will be converted
to values.
If the Excel workbook is saved then you end up with a Word document
with an *.xls file extension and you'll never be able to open it in
Excel again. Since that is so easy to do I don't recommend doing this.
Especially considering this is one I found out the hard way. :-(

Interesting. I have various spreadsheet file types listed in my
File/Open dialog box but I suspect this is due to having various
converter packs installed.
