Open a folder containing your .doc files.
Hold down shift, and right-click the file.
Now choose "Open With..." and "Choose Program"
In that window, choose Microsoft Word, and be sure to check the box
saying "Always use the selected program"
This should correct your file association settings. You may need to
restart Outlook.

It may be due to the issue that either your attachment is corrupted or you are not selecting the appropriate program for the opening of the attachment. to resolve this issue you need to first download your document and save in your hard drive and remember always use the program word for opening your document. this would solve your issue.
