Unable to Open Control Panel

When I try to open the Control Panel on Windows XP home edition SP2 the PC
gives me a error windows explore must close. Then locks system down.
Suggestions on fixing problem? I tried the MS Help area but there records
say I have to check with Gateway and I purchased unit from Rental Company,
so gateway is no help as well.

Suggestions:-
Scan your system with latest virus definitioned antivirus as well as
with latest editions of Spybot,Search and Destroy,CWShredder and
Adaware.Run all of them in Safe Mode.

Restore the Control Panel
