Unable to log into safe mode

Have a system running Windows XP home addition. system was bogged down with
spyware, cleaned it and then rebooted. The system is set up to just click on
the user name and it will log you in. Now you click on the name and it says
logging in you see a desktop background and then a message saying logging
off. and Puts you right back at the Logon menu
I rebooted into safe mode and it does the same thing for administrator.
start to login then get a message saying logging off. any ideas?
