A user recently installed AOL's new anti-virus and since then we have
not been able to log in successfully. Once the username, password and
domain are entered Windows starts however once personal settings are
applied the user is immidiately logged out.

We've tried this:

But no luck... any other ideas would be most appriciated.

This problem is usually caused by the file userinit.exe not being
where Windows expects it to be, either because
- it now has a different name, or
- it has been moved, or
- its reference in the registry is incorrect, or
- the system drive letter has changed.

The cure is simple for networked machines and not so
simple for stand-alone PCs. What's yours? Do you have
access to another WinXP/2000 PC?

Check the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

and see what is set for Userinit value.

Normal is: C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe,

If the same, check to see if anything was added to line, and/or
c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe was modified.

Also check the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify

and determine if anything new has been added in relation to AOL.

Did you try to uninstall AOL virus, and see if it fixes the problem?

You don't have to log in to check the registry - log in to another
network pc, open regedit, click file - connect network registry, and
put in the machine name of the affected pc -you'll have access to both
the HKLM and HKUser

Thanks for the note - I should have mentioned that we were not able to
connect remotely either. We ended up doing a repair from the original
WinXP CD. Thanks all.
