Cannot launch Mail from the Browser, whether from icon or menu.

New laptop with XP SP-2 and IE 6 straight from Dell. Using Outlook 2003,
which is the default. All e-mail accounts have been configured and are
working. All settings are exactly the same as laptop I will be replacing (it
is still operational; I am running simultaeously as I install all programs
and configurations).

Did I miss something? As a looong-time user, this one stumps me.

To set Outlook as the default mail client,- Go to Start, Run - Type in the
following with quotation marks and press OK
"C:\program files\microsoft office\office\outlook.exe" /checkclient
For more information on Outlook see:

Why should I have to enter a command? Not really questioing your advice, but
it seems to me the 'link' (luanching Outlook e-mail from IE) should be very
easy. All my settings are EXACTLY the same as my current laptop.

Why should I have to enter a command?

For the reason to solve you issue. If you feel differently about it then by all means do not do it and happily prosper along with the same issue.

Peter, Please don't take my question the wrong way... as a nearly 20-year
user of PCs, incluidng countless installs and upgrades, this is the 1st time
I've heard of having to issue a special command to allow launch of Outlook
from IE. It's always been seamless. I suppose I'm the type who wants to know
"why". This laptop is an out-of-the-box setup... should work with no hitches.
:>)

What the command does is to make sure the proper entries are made to the
registry to set the default email client for you in IE. You run the command
instead of going into manually edit the registry. Something didn't go right
when the software was installed, and the proper registry entries were not
made to associate Outlook with IE.
