Auto update already download all the things for me so no problem about
downloading.

When I try to install it, at first it seems all right, the first error
message comes when it is "backing up", says "could not back up Registry Value
HKLM/Software/..../setup/OC manage/subcomponenet/'beacon'/ 5: Access is
denied", I ignored it, then later another error message says another registry
almost the same path as last one, different name, was not able to back up,
access denied. Ignore it. Then it seems happy and going to success.

The following things was happend after backup and all successful:

"Creating Restore Point"
"Installing files..."
-> "The updates are being installed".

At this stage, when the bar was on about 1/3 of the "overall progress", one
error message comes out, say "Access is denied", then the whole installation
fails, start to undo the changes that have been made.

Actually not long ago I used some spyware removal software to clean up my
computer. I was afraid of possible problems so I created some quarantine
files for it. Is this a possible cause of the unsuccessful installation?

Thanks!

Why download SP2 as you did,why not let windows update install it
auto.Either way if the registry is corrupt, repair it,go to search at
microsoft,
read and follow thru with #307545 you might read #307973 also.Even
though these are titled as "xp wont start" they will still fix other problems
such as yours.
