unable to install winxp pro sp2

There are always a few .dll files unable to be written. It says hit enter
to try again, esc. to skip, and f3 to exit setup. I can install win98 se
with no problems. Any suggestions appreciated. Athlon 1.4Gig, 20Gb hard
drive, 256 mb DDR pc2100 memory, ECS-k7s5a motherboard, everything about 4
years old. Thanks.

Possible bad hardware. Windows 98 is not as *sensitive* to such things.
Hard drive - test it with a downloaded diagnostic from the hard drive
manufacturer's web page.
 
Thanks Stanley, the hard drive checked out. The CD-ROM turned out to be
defective.
After replacing the CD-ROM, I got a lot of warning messages during the
installation saying that some of my hardware was not approved by Microsoft
for xp. I installed it twice and both times it was too problematic. I
reinstalled Win98SE.
