Today, when trying to re-install some software which I
had recently uninstalled, I couldn't get to "first
base." The only response I get is the following error
message:

"The Win16 Subsystem was unable to enter Protected Mode,
DOSX.EXE must be in your autoexec.nt and present in your
PATH."

I have checked the contents of AUTOEXEC.NT, and there is
a Load High command for autoexec:

lh %SystemRoot%\System32\dosx

So the first part of the error message would seem to be
not the problem. What I don't know is where to look for
(or correct) the PATH problem. Any help would be greatly
appreciated, for I fear that this will not be the last
time I run into this error message if it goes uncorrected.

TIA

You will find your solution here:

That looks like just the ticket! Thanks so much!!

PS How did you locate this solution??

Thought that had to be the answer. Checked Config.nt and
the HIMEM line was there. Rechecked Autoexec.nt to see
that the DOSX line was still there. Figured I must have
either DOSX or HIMEM files corrupted, so went back to the
XP disk and expanded the files on it, copied (replaced)
them into the System32 directory and rebooted. Still got
the same error message. Now I'm really stumped!! What
about the PATH part of the error message? Is there
somewhere else that might be corrupted?

Sorry I missed your response earlier. Is this a DOS program you are trying
to install? You might check out this knowledge base article:

As far as how I found these articles, you can hit search at the top of the
article page and enter any keywords and/or error messages.

Good Luck
