Unable to Import PST file between old and new machines

I am attempting to move my Outlook (2003) Personal Folder with addresses,
saved emails, inbox...etc. from one machine to another. (Son taking my old
laptop to college)

I have tried all the workarounds on MS Knowledge Base.

The error msg Ikeep getting when I attempt to import is "The
fileC:\Documents and Settings\MyName\mailbackup.pst is not a personal folders
file" Even though the file has a .pst extension and the office 2003 icon.

I am saving the (PST) file to the old machines desktop...burning the file
onto CD...copying file to desktop of new machine from CD...when I follow the
import steps and click on the file I get the error message. I have tried this
process over and over and burnt at least 10 CD's. Each time naming the file
differently, with no success.
I loaded the new Service pack on both machines as well.

Appreciate any suggestions to this problem.
 
Well you have to ensure the read only flag is off, then in OL open the pst
If you are/will be copying to default location ensure pst name is different
than any existing pst
ie do not overwrite an existing pst

1) Since the old system had OL 2003, the new one must as well. OL 2003's
PSTs aren't compatible with any older version of Outlook.
2) Copy the old PST from CD to hard drive (but don't overwrite any existing
PST) and remove the read-only attribute.
3) Use File>Open>Outlook Data File to open the PST and either drag-and-drop
the items in it to the current folders, or just make the old PST the default
delivery location and use it.
