Unable to hear voice thru speakers when using microphone

I just purchased a Dell XPS 410 with Vista Home Premium. I am able to record
my voice and play it back thru the speakers. The problem is that I am not
able to hear my voice thru the speakers when I speak into the microphone.

Dell didn't have any answers and I can't find any information specific to
this problem.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Is the mic volume muted or turned very low?
