Unable to get IP on XP Pro

Steve

Here's a tough one (any help would be great):

I clean installed XP Pro on a PIII 550 Mhz box.
I then upgraded to SP1 and Installed an Intel 10/100 NIC card.

Then I tried to connect to my Motorola SB 5100 Cable Modem, but under
no circumstances do I get an IP address.
I tried both NIC and USB connections, both resulted in an IP like
this: 0.0.0.0.0.0.
"ipconfig /release/renew" under the CMD prompt does not work as well.

Cable guy arrived, tested the modem which works OK and said "problem
with your computer".
Un-installed/Re-installed drivers, moved NIC to different slot,
numerous restarts and powerdowns to both PC and Cable Modem, but still
no go.

Could it be that a major XP Service is not running?

P.S. I noticed other symptoms: Unable to share folders (I get the
message: "The Server service has not started". When I start the
'Server' service, and move the service to "automatic" I can share the
folder, but after reboot, same problem occurs).

Any help would be great,

The problem could be that the "DHCP Client" service isn't running.

Are there any messages in Event Viewer about that or about the Server
service? To see, click Start | Control Panel | Performance and
Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer. For more

did you check to see if the NIC is functioning properly? --The other
thing that you might try is to uninstall SP1. It is known to cause
problems in some cases. I have it running under XP-PRO on cable service
but, have had no problems.

Good luck,
Rick

one more thing for you to check are the cables and the connections,
I know sound silly but sometimes the obvious are at fault...try anyway

Success!!!

turns out XP Pro failed to load a bunch of services on startup, (like
DHCP, Server, DNS Client etc.) which caused the problem.

I un-installed SP1, and re-installed XP (upgrade, NOT full install),
and then re-installed SP1.
That did the trick.

Now the NIC receives an IP and I can surf without problems.
