unable to get into safe mode

I have been having major problems with IE. I have had Trojans, malware and god knows what else. So I posted a question about a problem I was having not being able to have more than one Web page up at once and was directed to a site which gave instructions on how to disinfect my computer, an awful lot of it had to be done in the safe mode. I have started up in the past this way a few times before but this tiime no matter what I do I can't get it into safe mode. Any suggestions? Be gentle I am a rank amateur!

There is more than one way to get in safe mode, the above link provides a good
tutorial with pictures to explain it.
