Unable to get internet sharing working properly

Hi there, I have a problem that I just can't figure out. I have a my laptop
connected to my standard computer via a fast ethernet network adapter
through a cross-over cable. I can exchange files and the like through the
network and when the box computer (which is the gateway to the internet via
dial-up) is connected to the internet I can get an icon on in the taskbar
of my laptop showing an active connection via the network. What I can't get
is for any of my programs that access the internet to actually see the
connection.

I use zone alarm 6 for a firewall and have closed that down and also
windows firewall to see if they were the cause to no avail?

Can anyone help me please.

Uninstall "ZoneAlarm" rather than shutting down. There is no need for
another desktop firewall.
