I have used Office 97 for some time, and find Outlook 97 adequate for my
needs. I have installed this many times on my newest computer that has
WindowsXP home edition, and a trial of Office2003 which I had activated, and
then deleted.

Outlook 97 will not open with an error message "unable to find default
folders," with no other useful options.

Any suggestions?
Thanks.

You can never install two versions of Office on the same partition without
thoroughly corrupting Outlook. I know of no one who has done this with
versions so far apart, and Outlook 97 provides none of the repair utilities
to fix the MAPI conflicts that have arisen from having conflicting versions
on the same partition.
It will be necessary to remove Outlook 2003 entirely, including all registry
settings. I have no idea what you meant by "deleting" Office 2003. You must
then reinstall Outlook 97, renaming any MAPI32.dll files before you do.
Finally, you will need to create a new Outlook 97 profile from scratch and
set it to use you former Outlook data file.

The Trial version must have overwritten Office system folders and files. You
must have not selected a custom installation of Off 2003. You'll need to
uninstall 97 and reinstall it. More info is available at the Office web site.
