Unable to Enable Divices in Divice Manager

I recently had to install a new hard drive because the
old on crashed. Now I have no sound. I have checked
control panel and the necessary divices are shown as
installed but in troubleshooting when I try to verify
that the divices are "turned on" (enabled) I cannot do
so. All I have when I pull up a divice and check
the "divice usage" box is a shaded box with no options to
pull down. In otherwords I cannot select "enabled"
or "disabled" because the pull down menu is not available
to me. How do I get this menu activated so I can turn on
the divices?
